RESET

Ruhr University Bochum is part of the EU-funded RESET project "Redesigning Equality and Scientific Excellence Together" (GA No. 101006560). RESET was applied for as part of the "Science with and for Society" funding line of the European Research Framework program Horizon 2020 and is funded for a period of four years (2021-2024). RESET is located at the Equal Opportunities Office at Ruhr University Bochum. The aim of the project is to promote gender equity in university policy strategies and, above all, to structurally anchor gender equality at universities that  have not yet developed institutionalized gender equity and diversity strategies. RUB supports the project partners that develop Gender Equality Plans within the project (Bordeaux, Lodz, Porto and Thessaloniki) together with project partners in Oulu as mentors. Internal evaluator of the project is SciencePo Paris.

In spring 2022, the university management of the project signed the Joint Statement on our engagement for equality, diversity and excellence in research. The document aims to promote sustainable and efficient cultural and institutional change that leads to greater equality and diversity. At the same time, it strives for progress in achieving excellent research and innovation results. The document illustrates RESET's common definition of scientific excellence, concretizes it at institutional level and strives for the inclusive further development of the understanding of scientific excellence.

Diversity in gatekeeping positions: guidelines and lessons learned (2024)

Niebel, V. (2024). Diversity in gatekeeping positions: lessons learned and guidelines. Zenodo.

This report contains the evaluation of focus group discussions, workshops and expert interviews with women in leadership positions or decision-making bodies at 4 RESET universities (Bordeaux, Porto, Oulu, RUB).

Building on the RESET report on gender equality at universities (2021), we follow the "fix the institutions, don't fix the women" approach and provide approaches for measures aimed at institutional change.

We build on research literature that examines access to decision-making positions, micro-political practices and organizational processes from a gender perspective.

Toolbox: boost and mentor the young generations (2024)

Niebel, V. (2024). Toolbox: using our international networks of researchers to boost and mentor the young generations. Zenodo.

This toolbox includes a critical reflection on social inequality in relation to educational advancement and academic careers.

It is based on the evaluation of central contents of two RESET events (February & May 2023), short videos of 12 doctoral students, as well as written interviews with 12 scientists from all RESET universities.

This reflection, as well as the evaluation of the interviews, justifies the orientation of the 6 tools, which are aimed at promoting diversity and equality in relation to the support of scientists in early career stages.

Toolbox: gender inclusive and diversity oriented (visual) communication (2022/23)

Niebel Viktoria. (2022). Toolbox for gender-neutral, diversity-oriented institutional communication (2.0). Zenodo.

The toolbox contains information & guidelines on gender- and diversity-sensitive communication (e.g. in relation to anti-racism, disabilities, multiple gender identities).

Redesigning Work-Life Balance in Academic CommunitiesRESET-EVENT "Redesigning Work Life Balance in Scientific Communities" on 18.06.2024

European universities face major challenges when it comes to balancing academic work, studies and family life. Long working hours and high pressure make it difficult for staff and students to reconcile work and family commitments. The lack of flexible working arrangements and adequate childcare support exacerbate this problem, especially for researchers and students at the beginning of their academic career.

On 18.06.2024, a workshop on these topics organized by the RUB team of RESET will take place in English. People from all status groups are invited to participate in this event. More information can be found on the RESET website here.

Acting TogetherRESET-EVENT "Acting Together Against Discrimination and Gender Bias in Higher Education" on 06.03.2024, 12-14h

To mark International Women's Day, RESET hosted this event, which focused on combating discrimination and gender bias in higher education. Discussions were held with representatives of initiatives at Ruhr University Bochum, the University of Bordeaux and Koc University in Turkey on institutional work, policy-making and activism to combat sexism and discrimination in the academic environment.

More information about the event can be found on the RESET website here.

WORK=LIFE OF CAMPUS - RESET's media campaign enters its second round

01.06.2023

With WORK=LIFE OF CAMPUS, RESET is continuing its FACES OF CAMPUS media campaign. The aim of the campaign is to emphasize aspects of academic life that are sometimes less visible, but are nevertheless important for academic excellence. In 2022, RESET launched FACES OF CAMPUS with the digital exhibition "Behind the Scenes", which showcased the contributions of women in supporting research positions.

In 2023, the WORK=LIFE OF CAMPUS exhibition will showcase spaces and initiatives at our universities dedicated to promoting well-being at work and study. This campaign aims to share perspectives, experiences and approaches applied by researchers, teachers and students, as well as institutional initiatives to promote work-life balance. In particular, we will highlight family factors such as parenthood and caring responsibilities.

RESET-EVENT "WOMEN IN SCIENCE - Intersectional and international perspectives"

17.05.2023

As part of the European Diversity Month in May, the RESET - Redesigning Equality and Scientific Excellence Together project would like to open up a space with this event to jointly highlight various aspects of diversity in the context of scientific communities and discuss them with members of the project universities and other universities.

In particular, we start with the aspect of communities and ask the question of what "common" means in relation to diversity. How do research communities become diverse and how is the diversity of their members appreciated? What different demands and concerns do individuals from research communities address to universities? And most importantly, what contribution can we all make to help shape academic culture in a diversity-friendly way?

At this event, we would like to offer the space to discuss these questions together with young researchers from different European universities. To this end, after a short input on the content, we will open up different spaces where researchers can network on the guiding questions and main topics listed below.

RESET-EVENT "WOMEN IN SCIENCE - Intersectional and international perspectives"

15.02.2023

women in science online event

To celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, RESET invites you to the event "Women in Science - International and Intersectional Perspectives" on 15.02.2023, an event focusing on the scientific careers of women in the early stages of their careers. Women in science will discuss strategies for building a career in science. In particular, the focus will be on the link between gender and advancement in education, with a special emphasis on female early career academics in the opening keynote and panel discussion. Break-out sessions will be held in the second interactive part of the event. The aim of the break-out sessions is to give participants the opportunity to reflect together on topics related to the development of an academic career, under the moderation of experienced female scientists, advisors or science managers.

"Women in Science: Intersectional and International Perspectives" is aimed at a broad audience - especially young female scientists and anyone who wants to provide impetus for the promotion of equal opportunities in science.

FACES OF CAMPUS media campaign

30.06.2022

Under the title Behind the Scenes, the media campaign Faces of Campus of the EU project RESET was launched in summer 2022. This was conceived under the leadership of the project team in the RUB Equal Opportunities Office.

The Behind the Scenes photo exhibition portrays female employees in science-supporting activities at the universities involved in the project.

We would like to thank Nesrin Denizer, Sandra Linn and Gülay Sagirli for sharing the diversity of their work in the media campaign with us!

At RUB, the news portal reported on the campaign. The European Research Executive Agency also reported on the campaign via twitter and linkedin.

International Women's Day

08.03.2022
International Women's Day has a long and eventful history. It is closely linked to the struggle for political and social participation and humane working conditions in the course of industrialization. Even in 2022, it has not lost its significance. It is used by women* around the world to demand equality in work, pay and education.

In RESET, we asked female scientists in the early qualification stages to share with us what challenges they personally experience in scientific work and the academic environment.
